A recent tragedy in New Mexico, where a newborn tragically passed away due to a Listeria infection, has reignited crucial public health warnings about consuming raw, unpasteurized milk. This incident, which appears to be linked to the mother's consumption of raw milk during her pregnancy, underscores the significant risks associated with this popular beverage in certain circles.
The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) has issued urgent advisories, imploring the public, especially those in higher-risk categories, to steer clear of raw milk products. Chad Smelser, deputy state epidemiologist for the NMDOH, emphasized, “Individuals who are pregnant should only consume pasteurized milk products to help prevent illnesses and deaths in newborns.” This simple act of choosing pasteurized milk can be a critical safeguard.
But here's where it gets controversial: the fervent arguments for raw milk.
Advocates for raw milk often tout a plethora of benefits, claiming it's more nutritious, a powerful immunity booster, and even a solution for lactose intolerance. These assertions, however, are largely unsubstantiated by scientific evidence. The process of pasteurization, a gentle heating and cooling method, does not significantly alter the nutritional profile of milk.
