Unlocking the Potential
The owners, seeking a sanctuary amidst the city's chaos, commissioned Mosley Thorold, an architectural studio known for its 'making-focused' approach. The challenge was to create a space that blended country-house charm with urban sophistication. What makes this project particularly fascinating is the delicate balance between preserving the building's history and adding a modern twist.
The architects, Nathaniel Mosley and Henry Thorold, recognized the potential beneath the outdated 1970s renovation. They embarked on a journey to unlock the house's hidden potential, starting with the lower ground floor. This space, once a maze of dark rooms, was transformed into a bright, airy sanctuary, showcasing the beauty of natural materials and neutral tones.
A Journey of Discovery
One of the key design elements is the journey from the front door to the garden. The architects wanted to create a sense of anticipation and surprise. By replacing a first-floor room with an open staircase, they crafted a dramatic descent into a double-height library and a spacious kitchen and dining area.
